“His chance will come” – Former teammate urges Cristiano Ronaldo to stay patient

Wayne Rooney, a former teammate of Cristiano Ronaldo’s at Manchester United, said that if Ronaldo wants to revive his career, he must “remain patient” and seize the opportunities that come his way. In his second season back at Old Trafford, Portugal international Ronaldo has struggled, starting only one of United’s seven Premier League games.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner led United in scoring with 24 goals the previous season, but his lone goal in nine games this time around came off a penalty against Sheriff. That occurred in the Europa League, a competition Ronaldo—the all-time leading scorer in the Champions League—is currently using to win over manager Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo will find life on the substitutes’ bench challenging, but Rooney, who played with Ronaldo from 2004 to 2009, believes his former teammate can yet turn things around. “The manager’s obviously gone a different way in terms of how they’re playing and been successful,” said D.C. United head coach Rooney.

“Cristiano… him and [Lionel] Messi are two of the greatest players to ever play the game, but ultimately time catches up with us all. He’s obviously not the player he was when he was 22 or 23, for instance. It’s a tough one for him. Knowing him, it’ll be very difficult to sit on the bench. I’m sure if he stays patient, his chance will come and it’s then him taking those chances and trying to force his way back in.”

Cristiano Ronaldo has travelled with Manchester United to their next league fixture

Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo has not scored in his first six league matches for the first time since 2005-06, during his first stint at Manchester United. This season, the Sporting CP youth product has 207 minutes and 12 shots in the Premier League without scoring, resulting in an expected goals (xG) value of 0.8.

The only United player with a greater xG among those without a league goal this season is playmaker Christian Eriksen (1.2). Ronaldo is anticipated to go with United to Everton on Sunday, a team against which they have won just one of their last seven league games.
