France defeated Morocco 2-0 to advance to an intriguing final matchup with Argentina on Wednesday. There was a lot of discussion about Kylian Mbappe’s fight with PSG teammate Lionel Messi in the final right away. Speculation also started to spread about Karim Benzema making an unexpected comeback.

The Real Madrid star injured his thigh during France’s initial training session in Qatar. He was subsequently ruled out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The former Lyon striker was not replaced by Deschamps in the roster. It was hinted that he might be obtainable for shortlisting if he was deemed to be in good enough shape.

After France’s semi-final victory over Morocco, a dramatic comeback denied any plans of a surprising return from Benzema to the national squad. He was reported to return to the team after regaining match fitness. The French coach was disturbed by the questions about Benzema’s potential participation or presence in the venue. He fired back at the media persons for enquiring about it.

The last to be injured is is Lucas Hernandez. Since then, I have 24 players to manage and you know them.” He added as reported by The Goal, “The group is there. I don’t take care of the invitations of players, former players or injured players. I don’t know who will be there.”

Karim Benzema was ruled out of the 2022 edition World Cup with an injury in the first training session of France in Qatar.  This World Cup would have been his second and potentially last if he had played. The Ballon d’Or winner was in killer form and was ready to prove his worth on the international stage.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is Karim Benzema’s third World Cup that he has missed. He was not selected for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa by then coach Raymond Domenech. Benzema was called up for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and featuring in five games and scoring three goals. He did not participate in Russia’s 2018 FIFA World Cup following a sex-tape scandel.
