” If you focused on football you’d have probably won” -Fans react to Germany’s minister spotted sitting beside FIFA President with ‘OneLove’ armband during 2022 FIFA World Cup
Fans troll German Minister for wearing "OneLove" armband during Germany vs Japan at 2022 FIFA World Cup
Germany players covered their mouths during a group picture before their World Cup Group E match against Japan on Wednesday as a gesture of protest against the OneLove armband boycott. Before their game against Japan on Wednesday, the German team positioned themselves in the standard formation.
The action was taken after FIFA threatened sanctions against seven European teams for donning the armband, which merely stands for tolerance and diversity. To make her point even more precise, German Interior Minister Nancy Fraser, also in charge of sports, sat next to FIFA President Gianni Infantino in the stadium and sported a “One Love” armband. With the hashtag #OneLove, Faeser tweeted a picture of herself wearing it.
Faeser earlier stated conclusively that she disagreed with FIFA’s decision to subject federations to such pressure. “ In today’s times, it is incomprehensible that FIFA does not want people to openly stand for tolerance and against discrimination. It does not fit in our times and it is not appropriate towards people,” Faeser said via reuters during a visit to a German FA event in Doha, before the game.
Why did Germany’s Interior Minister Nancy Faeser wear the “Onelove” armband?
The armband is a component of a year-long campaign to advance LGBTQ+ rights and inclusivity. At the same time, there is no apparent link to the armbands. The contentious anti-LGBTQ+ laws of Qatar are seen as a powerful symbol in a FIFA World Cup that received harsh criticism before the opening kickoff on Sunday.
Several European countries, including Germany, England, and Wales, abandoned their intentions to wear the OneLove armband after Fifa threatened to impose sporting sanctions, beginning with the captains wearing them receiving yellow cards. The human rights record of Qatar and its anti-homosexuality laws have drawn criticism. Being homosexual is prohibited by the law in Qatar.
The German football federation, the DFB, said in a tweet on its official account: “We wanted to use our captain’s armband to take a stand for values that we hold in the Germany national team: diversity and mutual respect.”
