“It is racist, pure racist,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino hits out at European Media for accusations that Qatar hired fans to fill World Cup stadiums
Gianni Infantino
Gianni Infantino has reacted angrily to claims that “fake” soccer supporters had appeared in videos shot in Qatar before to the FIFA World Cup. After a lot of films featuring Indian expats showing their support for Gareth Southgate‘s team in the upcoming competition were shared online, the dispute broke out.
A particular video of supporters singing the 1996 hit “Three Lions” by David Baddiel, Frank Skinner, and The Lightning Seeds became viral online, prompting some commenters to claim that the fans were actually paid actors.
Infantino denounced the claims and referred to them as “racist” in a statement prior to Sunday’s tournament opener between the hosts and Ecuador.
”I am reading that these people don’t look English so they can’t cheer for England, they look like Indians. What is that? Can someone who looks Indian not cheer for England, Spain or Germany? You know what it is? It is racist, pure racist.”
The most expensive FIFA World Cup till date
The opening match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be played on Sunday between hosts Qatar and Ecuador. The little gas-rich nation has spent $300 billion getting ready for the event in the twelve years since it won the rights to host it. Doha has changed, and the city’s capital is now peppered with new stadiums and hotels designed to house more than a million spectators over the course of the upcoming month.
The event, which is the first World Cup to be staged in the Middle East, is in many ways the realization of the region’s lofty sporting goals. Major European football clubs have received billions of cash from Qatar and its affluent neighbors, and four Formula 1 races will be held in the region next year.
Qatar 2022 has been surrounded by controversy from the beginning and is a tournament of many firsts. Concerns have been raised about Qatar’s history of adopting laws that restrict the rights of women and LGBTQ persons as well as how it treats migrant workers. The government’s assertion that it would host a World Cup with no carbon emissions has been proven false. A last-minute adjustment to the schedule added to the disturbance caused by leaving the customary summer time slot.
