Joe Lycett responds to pictures of him performing in Doha

Joe Lycett, a British comedian, has been skeptical of English football legend David Beckham‘s multi-million-pound agreement with Qatar. He threatened to shatter £10,000 of his cash if the retired footballer did not back out of the offer. His protest was due to the World Cup host’s poor record on human rights and laws prohibiting Homosexuality. He called Beckham a “disgrace” and posted a clip that emerged to display him tearing up the cash.

Now the 34, is criticized by the public over hypocrisy for attacking the 2022 FIFA World Cup host country, Qatar. Lycett performed in Doha, Qatar’s capital, in 2015, as well as in the United Arab Emirates.

In response to an article in The Sun regarding the performances, Lycett quipped that the publication had “caught out” and that he had published concerning the appearances in his book. He claims he was hardly funded “a few hundred quid” to play in Qatar about seven years ago.

In a statement posted on Twitter, he stated: “Oops! I’ve been caught out by The Sun! I did two gigs in Doha in 2015 and kept it entirely secret by writing about it in my book and mentioning it in multiple interviews including with the NY Times!. If you’re interested, I was paid a few hundred quid (not by Qatar but by UK comedy promoters) but it was 2015, and that went much further back then.”

He also stated that if he had been given cash to withdraw the exhibits, he would have accepted it. “I reckon that if a popular comedian from those days (eg Shane Ritchie) had shredded a few hundred quid to persuade me not to go, it would have made a difference,”. Some fans chastised the comedian for his posture in the country after seeing him perform in Qatar.

Joe Lycett did not destroy £10k in David Beckham’s rebellion in Qatar

Joe Lycett, a comedian, has admitted he didn’t burn £10,000 as part of a campaign against David Beckham’s position as an ambassador for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. After the former England star did not comply with his demand to quit the job in solidarity with LGBTQ people, Lycett live-streamed himself, presumably trashing the money on Sunday.

On Monday, Lycett stated that he had given the funds to a worthy cause. He said it might have been “irresponsible” to trash the money. Given that same-sex relationships are illegal in Qatar, several LGBT supporters choose to abstain from the FIFA Men’s World Cup.

Lycett clarified in a video update that was shared on Twitter: “The truth is, the money that went into the shredder was real, but the money that came out was fake. In fact, the 10 grand had already been donated to LGBTQ+ charities before I even pressed send on the initial tweet last week.”
