Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher criticized Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez for his underwhelming performances, since his arrival from Benfica. The 23-year old’s leadership qualities were questioned, despite him winning the FIFA World Cup at a young age.
Fernandez joined Chelsea for a record £107 million during the 2023 January transfer window, on an eight-year contract. The Blues decided to pursue the midfielder after his heroics for Argentina during the 2022 World Cup triumph. He was crowned as the Best Young Player of the Tournament. However, since moving to Stamford Bridge, he has been inconsistent, scoring seven goals in 55 matches.
Fernandez has not been able to live up to his massive price-tag, and he along with the other expensive Chelsea signings have been labelled as ‘billion pound bottle jobs’. Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher recently questioned whether Fernandez, a World Cup winner at the age of 23, was too young to be a world leader. This was in response to the midfielder’s poor performance during Chelsea’s EFL Cup final loss to Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Carragher had previously commented upon the Argentine’s performances, comparing it to fellow teammate Conor Gallagher. The Sky Sports pundit was of the opinion that the Englishman might have enjoyed a better campaign than Fernandez.
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez suspended for the FA Cup quarter-final against Leicester
Argentinean midfielder Enzo Fernandez will not be a part of the Chelsea line-up for the FA Cup quarter-final against Leicester City. He will remain suspended for the match, after the player picked up a second-yellow card during the fifth round clash against Leeds United.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side will now face Leicester in the last eight of the FA Cup, in March, and will be hoping to advance to the semi-finals. He will however be without his star midfielder, Fernandez, who received a suspension due to a yellow card in the first half against Leeds. Fernandez was booked for dissent after expressing frustration over a decision made by the referee.
Fernandez, was however crucial in the Blues 3-2 win over Leeds, as he assisted Conor Gallagher in scoring the decisive 90th minute winner.
