Argentine ace and one of the greatest footballers ever, Lionel Messi has announced that the 2022 World Cup Final will be his last match for Argentina, thus confirming his retirement from international football. The only piece of silverware missing from Messi’s elite trophy cabinet is the World Cup trophy. There was speculation Messi would not play International football after the World Cup, and the maestro has confirmed this himself.

Argentina registered a famous 3-0 win over 2018 World Cup finalists, Croatia, on Tuesday night in Qatar to reach their 6th World Cup final. Messi scored a goal and an assist each to give himself an opportunity for a World Cup trophy yet again. He rallied Argentina to the 2014 World Cup final too, only to lose to Germany.

After the win against Croatia, Messi spoke to the Argentine media outlet Diario Deportivo Ole where he confirmed his retirement. He expressed his happiness in being able to finish his journey at the World Cup final. He added that the next World Cup is a few years down the lane and he doesn’t believe he’ll play it, thus confirming his retirement.

Argentina will play a second World Cup final in the last three editions. Needless to say, they are one of the strongest teams in the world right now but it is also a fact that they haven’t won a World Cup since 1986. To break the drought, they will face either underdog Morocco or defending champions France.

Messi has been amazing in this tournament. Before this edition, he didn’t have any goals in knockouts at the World Cup; now he has two. With Messi firing from the sides and Julian Alvarez playing his part to perfection, Argentina could realistically become the World Cup champions this Sunday and the ‘little man’ will cement his place as the undisputed GOAT (Greatest Of All Time). .
