Liverpool were dealt a huge blow to their Champions League aspirations after a draw against Aston Villa. Roberto Firmino equalised for the Reds in the 89th minute after Jacob Ramsey’s first-half opener.

Liverpool struggled to create throughout the game, as the away side were organised off the ball and disrupted any potential opportunities. The result means Manchester United and Newcastle are favourites to secure UEFA Champions League football for next season. Both clubs are three points ahead of Liverpool with a game in hand. The Magpies are favourites to come third with a superior goal difference, and could confirm a place in the top four with a win against Leicester on Monday.

Liverpool began the game slowly, as Aston Villa defended well and countered with ease. Ollie Watkins won a penalty in the 22nd minute after a rash challenge by Ibrahima Konate. However, the striker put a powerful strike wide of the right post to keep the scores level. Ramsey scored just five minutes later to give the visitors the lead. Liverpool failed to clear their box, and the 21-year-old ghosted between two defenders, directing his diving header into the goal.

Cody Gakpo seemed to have equalised for the home side in the 55th minute, but his effort was disallowed for offside. ‘Bobby’ Firmino was the saving grace for the home side as he scored a header in his last ever home game for the club to snatch a draw late on.

Liverpool are now on 66 points with a game to play. It is an uphill battle for them in the race for a UEFA Champions League spot, as they are three points behind arch-rivals Manchester United who have a game in hand. The Red Devils take on Chelsea and Fulham – both at home, where they have one of the best records in the division.

It seems unlikely that United will throw this away, given they only need a draw from their final two games. Liverpool’s effort, although valiant, was too little, too late, as Champions League nights look set to return to Old Trafford next season.
