Manchester City beat Chelsea on an upbeat evening as the Citizens celebrated their Premier League title victory. City ran out winners thanks to a first-half goal from Julian Alvarez.
The Argentine’s goal was City’s 100th in home matches this season in all competitions, which is 34 more than any other side from Europe’s top five leagues. It was Alvarez’s 17th in all competitions for Manchester City, making him their second top scorer behind the record-breaking Erling Haaland, who has 52!
Alvarez scored in the 12th minute in a clinical counterattack. Wesley Fofana gifted the home team possession in the centre of midfield and Cole Palmer strode forward untouched. He found Alvarez just inside the area, who had all the time in the world to slot the ball beneath Kepa and into the far corner. City continued to dominate in the early stages, and would have scored a beautiful second goal if it wasn’t for a mix-up in the box between Phil Foden and Alvarez.
Chelsea had chances of their own soon enough, as Raheem Sterling was released in the City box. He could not capitalise, however, as his shot into the far corner was stopped expertly by Stefan Ortega. Connor Gallagher hit the woodwork a couple of minutes later, after a well-taken header from Lewis Hall’s cross. A raft of chances from the visitors went begging in the second half too, with Hall, Sterling and Cesar Azpilicueta all going close. Regardless, the Blues failed to score – a damning indictment for the London club given they were playing against the Champions’ second-string side.

Fans react to Manchester City beating Chelsea
Manchester City end the season having dropped just five points at the Etihad Stadium. They won 28 games, scoring a century of goals and conceding just 21 with a win rate of 93.3%. It has been yet another successful season for the Premier League champions, and they will look to further their domestic and European dominance in their FA Cup final versus Manchester United and UEFA Champions League final against Inter Milan.
Chelsea will look to reset in the summer, with the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino in the dugout. Fans of the club will be hoping for the return of the glory days of Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho, when they competed at the highest level.
