In a rain-heavy first half at the Etihad stadium in Manchester, it was the home team, Manchester City that took an early lead of 3-0 over RB Leipzig in the second leg of the Champions League’s Round of 16 clash. City’s main man, Erling Haaland, yet again proved to be the most lethal weapon for them as he struck another hattrick for the Citizens within the first 45 minutes.

While the first goal was due to a controversial penalty, that the referee ruled as a result of handball after getting assistance from the VAR, the second goal was a simple header from Erling Haaland. The Norwegian hit the penalty so hard that Leipzig’s keeper, despite guessing the direction of the ball correctly, failed to stop it.

As far as the second goal is concerned, Kevin de Bruyne’s brilliant left-foot strike hit the post and what could’ve been a brilliant goal, was eventually put into the net by Haaland. Leipzig’s defense looked clueless just like on the previous occasion. With these three goals, Haaland even became the fastest football player to reach 30 goals in the Premier League.

The third goal was just a regular tap-in after defender John Stones hit a header, but was brilliantly saved by Leipzig’s keeper. However, Haaland’s presence of mind came in much handy as he quickly rushed to the ball and hit the goal. RB Leipzig, on the other hand, failed to create any big chances in the first half of the Champions League tie. To add to their woes, their star striker, Timo Werner, was even shown a yellow card, by the match official for screaming at him over one of the decisions.

With a dominant show put up by Haaland, it looks like Manchester City will not face any real difficulties even in the second half of the match, especially when they now have a three-goal cushion. Leipzig, on the other hand, will have to find a way to not just stop Haaland but also means to breach the Citizens’ defense and score past Ederson.

Reacting to the first half, while some fans hailed Erling Haaland for his extraordinary performance, others just seemed in awe of him after a wonderful first-half hat trick. Here are a few reactions-

After already acquiring a 3-0 lead in the first half, it’ll be intriguing to see how many more goals can Pep’s men strike in the remaining 45 minutes. Whatever that will be, City’s entry into yet another Champions League final now looks almost certain.
