Manchester City set to splash £300 million to renovate home stadium

Manchester City are reportedly spending £300 million to renovate one end of the Etihad Stadium. The renovation will lead to the stadium’s stands capacity be on par with the likes of Arsenal‘s Emirates and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The main goal of the designs is to increase the capacity to about 61,000 by adding 7,700 more seats to the second tier of the North Stand. The expansion is expected to begin in November of this year and finish by the start of the 2025-26 season.

To further enhance the facilities, the redevelopment will also see the construction of a new hotel, covered fan park, megastore, and museum on the site. In order to minimize possible disruption, City insisted that the construction time would be carefully scheduled around the football season.

The renovation was designed by renowned architectural company Populous. Their previous work includes the biggest cricket stadium in the world in India as well as brand-new stadium in Tottenham.

Manchester City are at a risk to lose three key players in the summer transfer window. Players such as Ilkay Gundogan, Aymeric Laporte and Joao Cancelo might be headed to another club come the end of the season.

Gundogan’s contract is expiring at the end of the season. The skipper seems bound to leave the club in the summer attracting heavy interest from FC Barcelona. As for Laporte, game time has been an issue thanks to Manuel Akanji, Ruben Dias and John Stones usually rotating in the two center back spots. Cancelo left for Bayern Munich on loan in January and could sign a permanent deal with the Bavarian giants in the summer.

The offloading could lead to space for new recruits as City currently target Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham. RB Lepizig’s Josko Gvardiol is also on their radar.
