Manchester United key player to miss 2022 FIFA World Cup

David De Gea has been out of the Spain side after Luis Enrique has taken over.

Manchester United player David de Gea has been left out of Spain’s provisional 55-man squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup by Luis Enrique. The 31-year-old shot-stopper has proved his worth time and time again in the previous season and helped his club achieve a lot of crucial wins despite their defensive calamities and has also firmly maintained his position as Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper this season.

After the arrival of Erik Ten Hag, some fans ruled De Gea out of the manager’s plans but he has continued to perform thereby starting as the first-choice keeper with 16 appearances in all competitions but has struggled to get a single game after Luis Enrique’s appointment as Spain’s coach.

He was overlooked by Enrique back in March for the 23-man squad that was announced to face Albania and Iceland and Enrique chose Brentford’s David Raya over De Gea which raised several eyebrows. David Raya is known for his passing ability and better suits Enrique’s style of play.

What did Luis Enrique have to say about omitting De Gea from his plans?

Luis Enrique was asked about his decision and he replied, “It is part of the tracing we do with the goalkeepers. He is a player who is doing very well. I really want to see it in the context of the selection. He has the necessary profile to play with us. I need a goalkeeper that transmits peace and calmness to me. That doesn’t mean they won’t make mistakes, errors are part of football. What they generate I like a lot.”

De Gea has always been criticized throughout his career for his distribution and hesitancy in possession and this might be the reason behind Luis Enrique not considering De Gea in his plans. He has named five goalkeepers in his provisional squad: David Raya, Robert Sanchez, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Unai Simon, and Getafe’s David Soria coming as a surprise for many fans.
