Manchester United will have to fork out close to €60 million if they want to sign Barcelona’s star Frenkie de Jong this summer

Manchester United is thought to be ready to splash out between €50-60 million for Frenkie De Jong, who would link up with former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford. If the transfer goes through, he will be playing under Erik ten Hag, who is joining Manchester United this summer and De Jong enjoyed his best football under the coach when they were together at Ajax.

It was ten Hag that gave him a consistent run of fixtures, and Frenkie de Jong was a crucial part of the team that reached the Champions League semi-final of 2019.

Frankie de Jong signed for an initial fee of €75m in summer 2019 and has been a regular since then in the Barcelona team. The Dutchman has repeatedly insisted he wants to stay at Barcelona, and Xavi has said the same thing but the rumors keep on coming due to the club’s enormous debts.

On the pitch, though, De Jong has been unable to impose himself as he did at Ajax, and there was a feeling Xavi was finally the right coach for him. Although he has shown glimpses of his quality, the competition in an improving midfield has often affected De Jong, with the likes of Pedri, Nico, and Gavi all coming through the ranks.

A chance to reunite with coach Erik ten Hag, who got the best out of him at Ajax could prove to be the spark he needs, and should De Jong move to Manchester United, it could be a smart transfer for the player.

What will Frenkie De Jong bring to Manchester United if the signing takes place this summer?

Frenkie De Jong has the ability to control the tempo of the game and drive the ball forward, something United have struggled to do over the course of the season and he could pair well with the team’s other stars.

The Dutch international would most probably take Paul Pogba’s spot who is set to leave the club in the summer as his contract expires.
