Kylian Mbappe has been a key player for both PSG and France, leading his club to multiple domestic titles, helping France win the 2018 World Cup, and helping them reach the 2022 edition final. He has also won numerous individual awards and accolades, cementing his status as one of the top players in the world.

He was made the PSG vice-captain recently, and it is rumored that he is one of the front runners for national team captaincy following the retirement announcement of Hugo Lloris, who has been the captain. But former Paris Saint-Germain and France winger Jerome Rothen questions Kylian Mbappe’s credentials for the France captaincy. He believes national head coach Didier Deschamps does not view Mbappe as the right profile for the role.

Rothen said he believes Deschamps doesn’t like his captains to make a fuss or give the media much to talk about. Mbappe is not the austere and reserved figure that Lloris was, and making him captain would be a culture shift.

It would go against Deschamps’ nature [to make Mbappe captain],” Rothen told RMC Sport. “He never wants to make noise with his statements. For example, when Lloris was captain, he was so because, beyond being a remarkable player, he was never a media darling. “Mbappe will never respect Deschamps’ wishes in press conferences if he names him captain.

That is why Rothen, going against the consensus in France, believes that the 24-year-old superstar will be overlooked when the time comes to name the next captain. “I don’t think [Deschamps] will name Mbappe captain,” said Rothen. “He makes too much noise, he reacts too much, and Deschamps is the complete opposite. “He won’t allow his captain to express himself like that, to light fires in press conferences. When there’s a fire, often it is the captain who should try to put it out. Kylian, being frank as he is, would pour petrol on it,”.

PSG Chairman Nasser Al Khelaifi unveils plans for a new training facility for PSG players

On Thursday, the Chairman and CEO of Paris Saint-Germain, Nasser Al Khelaifi, gave the first-team players and staff a sneak peek of the club’s future training center, the PSG Campus. During the tour, the players and staff could see the site’s layout and look around the professional players’ building, designed by internationally renowned architects Wilmotte, as well as the pitches that will be cared for in the same way as the Parc des Princes. The players could also see for the first time what their future training and living spaces will look like, designed to be the ideal environment for improving both team and individual performances.

The PSG Campus will be the headquarters of the Parisian club’s elite players from the start of the 2023-2024 season. They will be joined by the Youth Academy players in January 2024, and subsequently by the club’s other sports departments.

During the tour, Nasser Al-Khelaifi announced, “Opening the PSG Campus confirms our ambitions for the future of the club. We wanted it to be modern, at the cutting edge of professionalism and focused on performance and excellence. With this new training center, Paris Saint-Germain is strengthening its position as one of the world’s greatest sports clubs for decades to come. From tomorrow, the world’s top players will train in the best possible conditions to achieve success over many years.”

The new training center is a project that has been driven by the club ever since Qatar Sports Investments bought Paris Saint-Germain in 2016. The club has invested nearly €300M in building the new PSG Campus to improve the quality of its Youth Academy, which is already one of the best in the world. The PSG Campus will serve as the nerve center for training future football champions in the Greater Paris region.
