“Messi’s nightmare is back” – Twitter reacts to Germany’s FIFA World Cup 26-man squad that includes Mario Gotze
Mario Gotze has returned to the Germany squad for the World Cup, with Youssoufa Moukoko and Niclas Fullkrug also included. Though he hasn’t played for the national team since 2017, Gotze, who scored the game-winning goal against Argentina in the 2014 final, has earned a new opportunity due to his strong play since joining Eintracht Frankfurt this year.
While Timo Werner and Lukas Nmecha are out due to injuries, Dortmund forward Moukoko might earn his first senior Germany debut. However, Mats Hummels will not be returning because he has not played for his country this year despite being in excellent form this season.
Armel Bella-Kotchap of Southampton, Lukas Klostermann of RB Leipzig, who hasn’t played in the Bundesliga since the season’s first weekend, and Matthias Ginter and Christian Gunter of Freiburg are also included in the defence. Along with Ilkay Gundogan of Manchester City and Kai Havertz of Chelsea, the Bayern quartet of Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, Thomas Muller, and Leon Goretzka is also included.
Niclas Fullkrug, an attacker for Werder Bremen who has 10 Bundesliga goals to his name so far this season, is another player hoping to play for Germany for the first time.
