Mikel Arteta has chosen David Raya as his preferred first-choice goalkeeper. After much debate online about David Raya and Aaron Ramsdale, Mikel Arteta seems ardent about David Raya as the goalkeeper has started for Arsenal in the past two games.
This season, Arsenal loaned the Spanish goalkeeper, David Raya, from Brentford. He was supposed to be the backup for Aaron Ramsdale, but Raya has started the last two games, including a crucial Champions League match that Arsenal hadn’t played in for six years. Raya was one of the best goalkeepers in the league last season, making an average of 4.1 saves per game and having the highest save rate at 77%. It’s no secret that Mikel Arteta has wanted him on the team for a while.
Aaron Ramsdale won’t be too delighted with his manager’s latest preference. Ramsdale has been relegated twice from the Premier League in his career but had shown glimpses of a top keeper. After signing for Arsenal in 2021, the goalkeeper had a remontada as he went from previously relegated to fighting for the title.
Ramsdale must be thinking his place in the team is solidified. However, with Arsenal’s latest signing, the goalkeeper has found himself on the bench this season. Plus, the early goal he conceded against Fulham won’t help his case in getting back into the playing XI.
“Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta believes David Raya is a better goalkeeper than Aaron Ramsdale. He is set to make him his undisputed number one,”– claims the Mirror writer, John Cross. With the North London Derby coming up on Sunday, at the Emirates, Mikel Arteta’s first-choice goalkeeper discussion is up for debate.

The debate between David Raya and Aaron Ramsdale
Since the arrival of David Raya, social media and media outlets alike have been debating over the topic. One, Who is Arsenal’s starter, and second, is it good to have two potential starters in one team when it comes to goalkeepers?

Premier League legend Peter Schmeichel has his say on the topic. “I don’t get it. I don’t understand. Why do you want to create a competition situation for goalkeepers?” the ex-Manchester United keeper said. He labeled the GK position as ‘reactive’ and defended his views by stating that competition is unhealthy as a GK.
Social Media has been bombarding the debate with many arguing one over the other. Mikel Arteta seems to currently prefer his fellow Spaniard but has also revealed that the GKs could be rotated throughout the season. Currently, in a good run of form, the debate has not caused any drop in performance for Arsenal.
