“He smashed my hand away and didn’t want to speak,” Netherlands striker claims he was ‘disrespected’ by Lionel Messi following Argentinas win at 2022 FIFA World Cup
Dutch striker Wout Weghorst was ‘disappointed’ by Lionel Messi’s action post Argentina’s triumph over the Netherlands in the penalty shootout. Prior to the game, the PSG forward revealed he was “angry” at Louis van Gaal’s remarks, and his temper boiled out during the World Cup quarterfinal encounter.
After putting Argentina up 2-0 from the penalty spot, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner raced towards Van Gaal’s dugout and cupped his ears in celebration. He again argued on the pitch with the opposing manager after the game; halting a post-game interview to call Weghorst “stupid” as the Netherlands forward passed by.
Late in the game, Messi’s Argentina teammates engaged in an on-field brawl while celebrating their victory in front of their opponents. Furthermore, the Dutch striker has now talked about his post-match altercation with the Argentine captain which wasn’t as per his expectation as Messi was still holding some ‘Beef’ against him.
“I wanted to give him a hand after the football match. But he smashed my hand away and didn’t want to speak with me,” Weghorst insisted. “My Spanish is not good, but they were not respectful words. So it was really disappointing.”
Lionel Messi led Argentina to an historic quarterfinal victory against Natherlands at 2022 FIFA World Cup
After setting up Nahuel Molina’s first goal and scoring another from the penalty spot, Lionel Messi believed to have given Argentina the victory during regular time. Weghorst was introduced by Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal with 12 minutes remaining, and it was a brilliant move. Five minutes after being introduced, Weghorst halved the deficit by heading in Berghuis’ inswinging cross.
He then scored another crucial goal with almost the final kick of regular time. After a thrilling 2-2 tie, Emiliano Martinez helped Argentina defeat the Netherlands in a penalty shootout. Virgil van Dijk and Steven Berghuis were denied by Martinez before Lautaro Martinez converted the final penalty kick to advance Argentina to the semifinal showdown against Croatia.
