Lionel Messi 'flies' to win an aerial duel in a crowd of Dutch players
Argentina captain Lionel Messi carried his country to a historic triumph in the Qatar World Cup in 2022. Their side defeated France in the final to become the ultimate Champions. However, Messi shared his regret due to the controversy with the Dutch team and coach in an interview on Monday. Lionel Messi claimed that he didn’t ‘like what he did’ during their intense quarter-finals clash with the Netherlands.
The game, which Argentina won through the penalty shootouts, saw plenty of heat and tension from each side. A total of 17 yellow cards were dished out, with Messi receiving one of those as well, due to his dissent. Lionel Messi celebrated in a somewhat mocking manner after his goal from the penalty spot, as he cupped both his ears while standing in front of Dutch coach Louis Van Gaal. The Argentine captain took his mocking to the next level after the game, performing a rude gesture towards Dutch striker Wout Weghorst, who scored twice during the match.
“These are moments of a lot of tension, a lot of nerves. It is very quick and people react the way they react. Nothing was planned, it just happened.” Messi stated. “I don’t like to come across like this, but these things also happen.” He added further. Lionel Messi claimed that his team “in general was better than its rivals” when compared to the Dutch squad.

Lionel Messi and Argentina’s road to World Cup victory in Qatar
World Cup winners Argentina were the first team to enter the World Cup 2022 final, ahead of France. Argentina defeated last year’s runners-up Croatia in a crunching 3-0 match on December 13. The PSG superstar was on top of his form, as he scored one goal, and provided two assists, completing 2018’s revenge against Croatia.
Argentina had a remarkable journey in the World Cup 2022 as they went on to defeat France in a historic, perhaps the best final of all time. The match went to penalty shootouts after both sides scored 3 goals, Lionel Messi was also on the scoresheet. In contrast, his PSG teammate and French striker Kylian Mbappe bagged a hat trick in the final. Since their loss to Saudi Arabia in their opening game, Argentina went on to prove their worth, defeating the Netherlands and Croatia in the quarter-finals, and semi-finals respectively.
Lionel Messi remembered Argentinian Diego Maradona during the interview after their World Cup final, stating “I would have liked him, if he didn’t hand me the World Cup trophy, to at least see all this.” Messi said Maradona and many people who loved Messi were ‘pushing him from above’ to be victorious in the World Cup.
