Own goals in football are often unfortunate and forced errors. The 2. Bundesliga (the second division of German professional football) witnessed one of the most bizarre own-goals in recent times. The error was so ‘absurd’ and unbelievable that fans are left questioning whether the keeper was involved in match-fixing. The strange own-goal came during the ‘Hamburger Stadtderby’ when Hamburg were hosted by FC St. Pauli.
Even though players often feel the pressure get to them in crucial moments, the own-goal situation happened under little to no pressure. A classic ‘passing from the back’ routine ended in disaster for the visitors when Guilherme Ramos passed the ball back to his goalkeeper. Daniel Heuer Fernandes then proceeded to blast the ball away from the danger area, keeping in mind the opposition forwards.
However, his attempt to do so backfired miserably, as the ball hit the roof of the net. A close replay shows that the pass received by Fernandes took a slight wobble before it made contact with his feet.
Nonetheless, his awkward clearance saw the opposition go 2-0 up within 27 minutes. However, much to his relief, teammates Robert Glatzel and Immanuel Pherai equalized for the visitors, thereby bailing Fernandes out.
The internet reacts to the ‘own goal of the year’
Heuer Fernandes’ own goal against FC St. Pauli has been dubbed the ‘own goal of the year’ by the official YouTube channel of the Bundesliga. Even though the player looked distraught after realizing his error, fans and supporters have had a good laugh on Twitter following the incident. Fans have become creative and even questioned whether it was match-fixing.
Keywords like funny, unbelievable, and worst-own-goal are trending on Twitter following the incident. Fernandes was even compared to Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana by a certain set of fans, pointing to his error-prone nature. Some even said that this is such a good own-goal that it is deserving of the Puskas Award. Some, however, took Fernandes’ side and blamed the pitch conditions for the error.
Another fan noticed the wobble just before it hit Fernandes’ foot, thereby exempting him from the blame. Some were not convinced of this, as they went out to make assumptions that the keeper ‘is getting the bag’ (of money) for his services or is involved in betting. Pointing to the intensity and history of the fixture, one supporter couldn’t stop laughing at Fernandes’ choice of game to commit the ‘error’. Hamburger drew the game and remains 3 points behind leaders FC St. Pauli.
