Former Netherlands National Team Head Coach Louis Van Gaal made bold claims regarding Lionel Messi and Argentina in the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Following the defeat to Lionel Scaloni’s men in the quarterfinals, Van Gaal left the position of Dutch head coach. Eventually, the Argentines went on to lift their first WC trophy with Messi in Lusail.

Recently, however, the former Netherlands boss hit out against Lionel Messi and Argentina. He said that the World Cup was a premeditated and ‘scripted’ tournament that Leo Messi and Co. were set to win regardless. The 72-year-old listed out incidents during the Netherlands-Argentina game, claiming that certain Argentine players were not penalized for “overstepping” at certain points in the game.

But the Dutchman has gotten heat from the fans and even the National Team Captain Virgil Van Dijk for his ‘vague’ claims. Now, former French International and Manchester United player Patrice Evra came out in support of the Argentine. Argentina received 5 penalties in total during the tournament, out of which Messi converted 4, only missing the one against Poland in the group stages. The ex-Manchester United player said, “Those who belittle Argentina’s World Cup because of their penalties, must come and score them themselves.”

No doubt, the Netherlands versus Argentina was one of the most heated clashes in Qatar. A total of 15 yellow cards and one player was sent off. The South American side won the tie in penalties, but Van Gaal’s remarks have come a little too late to be true it seems.

Following controversial comments against Argentina, Louis Van Gaal has been at the center of controversy. Several players have come out against the claim, with the latest being Virgil Van Dijk. The Netherlands skipper and center-back came out with a strong message in disagreement with the former Coach. He said, “He can say whatever he wants.”

Van Dijk, who missed the opening penalty for the Netherlands against Argentina, said that he did not share the same opinion as his former coach. Further, he added that he did not agree with his opinion either. Meanwhile, the loss meant the end for Van Gaal at the helm. Van Dijk currently plays and captains Liverpool Football Club as well as the Dutch National Team. He is a regular starter for new Oranje Head Coach Ronald Koeman.

Virgil Van Dijk has shown respect for Leo Messi on multiple occasions in the past. Especially when he came second best in the Ballon d’Or voting in 2019. Henceforth, Vand Dijk coming out in support of the Argentine superstar yet again is no surprise.
