Piers Morgan defended Lionel Messi’s alleged decision of joining Saudi Arabia along with eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo claiming he isn’t to be blamed for choosing the Middle East. The journalist also made claims they are not doing anything morally wrong comparing the situation with former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
“I think if you, first of all, you’ve got to look at the situation that you know last year our elected government and the prime minister elected at the time Boris Johnson if you remember when there was all the oil prices were shooting up very high, he went over to Saudi to try and do a deal for us. We have companies over here in the UK who trade on a daily basis providing arms, airplanes, and cars everything to Saudi”.
“Therefore a sportsman who has a very short lifespan or in his career you can’t blame them at the end of the day for going there”. Morgan also revealed other reasons why the Argentine opted for the Middle East. “It looks like Messi may be following Ronaldo because the money is simply stratospherically higher than these guys could get anywhere else in the world at this stage of their careers,” Mr. Morgan said.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has generated intense speculation regarding his future intentions after opting against a new deal at Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain. With those terms running down, Messi is set to hit free agency this summer. The 2022 World Cup winner has been linked with a retracing of steps to Barcelona, but financial struggles at Camp Nou have made an emotional return to a spiritual home difficult.
Barcelona star refusing to leave Camp Nou blocking Lionel Messi’s return
Barcelona forward Raphinha has denied rumors of a departure and this could potentially hamper Lionel Messi’s return to Camp Nou. The Argentine is confirmed to leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer and wants to reunite with the Catalans, but financial complications mean they will have to offload a few players first. Raphinha was among those who reportedly were on the transfer list and the Portuguese football page, Fanaticos Por Futebol, put out a post relating to his transfer.
“Raphinha has given the OK to hear transfer proposals for him. Barcelona want a minimum of €80 million. Chelsea and Newcastle United are the most interested clubs, and Deco will ensure the club receives the highest possible fee,” as per reports to which the player responded, “Fake news. Who shared that news is not well informed & not professional.”
Having joined from Leeds United on a £50 million transfer last summer, Raphinha has failed to live up to his hefty price tag, scoring only 10 goals in 45 games, including seven in La Liga from 31 appearances. Barcelona, who are currently going through a financial crisis, need to reduce their wage bill in order to accommodate Messi, and the 26-year-old was supposedly among those who could be axed.
