“Players are getting treated like cattle,” Liverpool legend slams FIFA President over the concept of Club World Cup

Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, has disclosed that the organization plans to launch a new 32-team Club World Cup structure in 2025. In China, a tournament with a similar system was scheduled to begin in 2021. However, those efforts were abandoned because of the COVID-19 epidemic. However, FIFA will finally implement the concept in 2025, and 32 elite clubs worldwide will compete in the event.

The FIFA President stated: “The first edition will take place in 2025 in the summer.” He drew similarities between the new tournament with the Confederations Cup. He added, “They will be the best teams in the world. They will be invited to participate. All of the details will be developed in due course, and we’ll decide where it will take place as well over the next few weeks or months in consultation with all of the stakeholders. Of course, the details of that still need to be discussed and agreed, but the 32-team tournament will go ahead, making it really like a World Cup,”.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher comes out, calling the ruling body’s decision absurd. He believes that the players would suffer significantly from adding new competition to an already packed schedule. He thinks FIFA despises the UEFA Champions League and intends to host a contest on par with it. The revised Club World Cup format is what they intend to introduce as a result.

The former Liverpool captain tweeted, “Like the ridiculous idea of @FIFAWorldCup every two years, this is another one from Infantino. Players need rest at some point, they are getting treated like cattle. FIFA hate the CL & want something similar themselves. European clubs should boycott it,”.

FIFA’s new plans for the Club World Cup

Seven international teams typically compete in the present Club World Cup. The winning teams from each of the six FIFA confederations and a host are the qualifying clubs. The following Club World Cup competition gets underway in February. As was the case the last time, Abu Dhabi is the host.

However, the unpopular choice is not particularly unexpected. FIFA is growing its competitions and even starting new ones. A “FIFA World Series” is also being planned, and Infantino has announced that the organization is expanding the World Cup. Another contest between confederations is being held during international breaks.

Players currently need more free time due to the increase in ongoing competitions and the inclusion of new ones. Burnout and injuries will remain significant issues in the sport. Entertainment to the fans should not come at the cost of Athletes life. It isn’t a value the beautiful game stand for.
