Qatar sends mobile homes used in 2022 FIFA World Cup to earthquake hit Turkey and Syria to house displaced families
qatar has decided to send 10,000 mobile homes to help the earthquake victims
Qatar government officials have agreed that the temporary homes used for accommodation during the world cup are being used to rehome the victims of the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria. The government is sending 10,000 mobile homes to the country to aid the relief work.
According to the Qatari Fund for Development, the body overlooking the relief program, some of the units have already been dispatched and the rest will reach the rescue sites soon. “The plans of the 2022 World Cup always intended for such temporary accommodations to be donated. However in view of the urgent needs in Turkey and Syria, we have taken the decision to ship our cabins and caravans to the region, providing much-needed and immediate support to the people of Turkey and Syria,” one government official told BBC news.

The response after the Earthquake
This is one of many pieces of help Qatar has sent to its neighbours. It has already sent 100 tonnes of supplies to the countries. There are 150 workers who are also on the ground aiding the rescue work. Other gulf countries have also joined the rescue effort. The United Arab Emirates has already pledged to help the countries with relief worth $100 million. Saudi Arabia has already dispatched close to ten aircraft filled with aid.
Two earthquakes of 7.8 and 7.5 magnitudes have shaken the two countries. The disaster left a huge mark in the two affected countries leaving more than 40,000 dead. Over 6,000 properties have been destroyed in the Gaziantep region alone, which has been identified as the epicenter of the quake. 130 contractors have been identified by local authorities for not following building regulations, resulting in a huge death toll. The response has been swift but the number of death is going up each day as more and more bodies get dug up from the rubble.
These mobile homes constituted much of Qatar’s accommodation during the FIFA World Cup. The country was initially in a dilemma about making arrangements for the millions of fans that pour into the world cup venue. However, Qatar managed to make use of the shipping containers to turn them into temporary solutions for the guests.
Qatar spent around $200 billion to construct multiple stadiums to host the tournament and one of them, Stadium 974, was entirely built with these units, making them eco-friendly and place-saving at the same time. These units are now coming in handy in helping out the helpless in the disaster-stricken region.
