“Relieved that this matter is over,” Mason Greenwood issues first statement after Manchester police drops all charges against him

Manchester United starlet Mason Greenwood finally broke his silence after the Crown Prosecution Service acquitted him of the sexual harassment charges on Thursday. The 21-year-old has been hiding from the limelight ever since the Greater Manchester Police filed complaints against him for assaulting his girlfriend.

Greenwood said, “I am relieved that this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support. There will be no further comment at this time.”

Greenwood’s statement came right after his boyhood club Manchester United published on their website that they will be conducting an internal investigation into the matter. The club communicated clearly that the court of law may have discharged him of his allegations but that does not automatically make him a Manchester United player again.

The club said in a public statement, released after the law enforcement published its verdict, “Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped. The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.”

Greenwood was under investigation since January 2022 after an Instagram post of his girlfriend Harriett Robinson surfaced where she showed the cuts and bruises that the player had inflicted on her. Greenwood’s house was soon raided by the police and a formal investigation was launched to bring the forward to justice.

He was being tried for rape, assault, and coercive control by the prosecution. According to reports by several publications, the estranged duo have since been reunited and Robinson decided to put the player out of his misery. The official verdict also hinted at the same sequence of events. The verdict read, “We have a duty to keep cases under continuous review. In this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.”

While Greenwood is a free man to the law, he is yet under heavy scrutiny by the internet. His sentencing was harshly ridiculed on all social media platforms.

Gary’s Faux Pas

Club legend Gary Neville has also landed head-first into hot water after he liked and allegedly retweeted a tweet by Nazir Afzal, a former public prosecutor who defended the innocence of Greenwood. Neville has faced intense criticism from the netizens and has tried to explain it as an accident.

He tweeted later, “I liked a tweet relating to the Mason Greenwood news this afternoon from Nazir Afzal. ( the former director of public prosecutions ). This like is being misinterpreted. It was a clumsy like as I obviously condemn any violence against women.”

The Tweet by Afzal advocated for the fact that Greenwood is innocent until proven guilty and not the other way around. However, the social bird was quick to catch him on his apparent fabrication.

Some of the commenters pointed out that he had retweeted the original tweet as well. “A clumsy like and an accidental retweet?” asked one person. The older of the Neville brothers have also been criticised before for changing his stance in opposition to Qatar World Cup, supporting Ryan Giggs in the trials against his sexual assault allegation.
