Sean Dyche explains his ambitious venture in attempting to secure Harry Kane transfer during his time at Burnley

“Numbers were just too big,” Sean Dyche reveals what stopped Harry Kane from signing for Burnley as a teenager

In a recent interview, Everton boss Sean Dyche reveals his failed attempts at trying to sign a young Harry Kane a decade ago, while he was still the manager of Burnley FC. The English talisman is second to only Teddy Sheringham in terms of all-time top scorers in the Premier League and is already the highest goal-scorer for England.

The Tottenham Hotspurs’ all-time leading goalscorer’s journey could have been much more different had Sean Dyche’s ventures to sign the English captain not been futile. “Years ago, I tried to sign him at Burnley but financially, it was too much” explained the former Burnley boss. “I’d hoped Spurs would let us have him, but by then they’d seen what he could do.

Dyche continued, “We made a phone call, but the numbers were just too big for us, the timing was wrong, but Tottenham made a great decision.” He added, “Harry doesn’t lack belief but sometimes when your career isn’t where you want it to be you have to hang onto your professionalism.”

While Sean Dyche has been singing praises for the Tottenham star man, it will be interesting to see whether his Everton side will be able to silence one of Europe’s most lethal strikers in Harry Kane at Goodison Park on Monday.

Stellini as Tottenham’s assistant manager

Following the mutual termination of former Tottenham boss Antonio Conte’s contract during the international break, the Italian manager was succeeded by his deputy, Cristian Stellini for the Lilywhites. The new Spurs boss did take charge of the club for the better part of February following Conte’s gall bladder surgery, which saw the former Tottenham manager out of commission for most of February, but Stellini has yet to make an impact as a manager of a club.

To date, the only club where Stellini has managed the first team was Lega Pro club Alessandria, where he was sacked after less than 6 months in charge following a poor run of form. Despite his shortcomings as a head coach elsewhere, the new Spurs manager will be backing himself for the job given his 100% record for the North London club with victories over Manchester City, Marseilles, West Ham and Chelsea.

Tottenham’s match against Everton holds immense importance for both sides, with Everton fighting for survival, and Tottenham looking to strengthen their hold on a top-four position with Newcastle United breathing down their necks.
