During the Group stage fixture played between Switzerland and Serbia in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the match saw a couple of controversies, naturally as Granit Xhaka was playing for the Swiss side. After quite some time in the match, the player made the Serbian bench angry with his derogatory gesture towards them by grabbing his crotch. Few players even went on the pitch to confront the player for his actions for which later he was booked by the referee. However, Granit Xhaka didn’t seem to stop with his controversies on the pitch, and after full time, the player was involved in another huge controversy with this time the nature being political.

Xhaka was spotted wearing a shirt with the name, “Jashari” on his back. After getting questioned by the media for his questionable action the player claimed that he was no “political background to it whatsoever”, emphasizing the fact that the move was for his Swiss teammate Ardon Jashari. However, the surname is quite popular as it happens to be the surname of Adem Jashari as well; a founder of the Kosovo Liberation Army that fought for independence from the former Yugoslavia.

When looking for facts, it can be easily extracted that the players Xhaka and Shaqiri are both of ethnic Albanian heritage linked to Kosovo which declared independence from Serbia in 2008. As per reports the player might be subjected to an investigation from FIFA following his latest gestures, to which the manager Murat Yakin will “wait and see” if any action is taken against Xhaka.

Xherdan Shaqiri had Switzerland pushed to the lead with a deflected shot in the 20th minute but Serbia, who had been the better team, equaled through a terrific Aleksandar Mitrovic header and then creatively led when Dusan Vlahovic scored right in the bottom corner. With his help, at that time the Serbians moved to second in their Group in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

However, Switzerland snatched back the losing match through Breel Embolo in the final minute of a thrilling first-half and once showed them who’s the team boss, after gaining the lead early in the second period from a wonderful team goal, completed by Remo Freuler. The Swiss are next faced up against Portugal; the leaders of their group who with a careless mess conceded a final-minute winner from South Korea.
