“This is mafia”- FC Barcelona should get ‘punished’ over Frenkie de Jong’s ill-treatment and contract issues, says Rafael van der Vaart
Frenkie de Jong and Rafael van der Vaart
Prior to Barcelona’s La Liga opener against Rayo Vallecano, Rafael van der Vaart launched his most explosive tirade yet, tearing the entire team apart. Even though the Catalan giants are having financial difficulties, they were still able to improve their lineup this summer by bringing in Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen, Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and Jules Kounde.
They have used a variety of financial tools to achieve this and are currently at odds with players over their position at the Camp Nou. While the Blaugrana are frantically trying to offload their enormous payroll, Frenkie de Jong and Martin Braithwaite are refusing to leave.
Being one who doesn’t hold back
Van der Vaart didn’t mince words when he appeared on Dutch television. The former Real Madrid player referred to Barcelona president Joan Laporta as a “mafia” and labelled the organisation an idiot.
TheEuropeanLad quoted van der Vaart as simply stating: “When you don’t have any money, how on earth can you purchase players? I think it’s shameful. And Laporta, who is constantly smirking and has a large head. He considers himself to be the king. However, I believe he is somewhat foolish.”
Then he talked about de Jong’s treatment, who had significantly less playing time throughout the preseason. Van der Vaart thinks his fellow countryman has a right to remain in Catalonia for as long as he pleases and that the Netherlands international should have even been used in central defense.
Van der Vaart continued: “You can’t treat people like this. Frenkie earns too much? You sign a contract and then you fulfill the contract or leave on good terms, but not like this. “This is mafia and they have to get punished.”
“Barca’s name on the map has become really bad. It’s a great club and everyone wants to play there.
“But as of now we judge it differently and I find it a disgrace when you play for them.“
Earlier this week, there were concerns raised about the registration status of Barcelona’s new additions, and Kounde is still not registered. He was not involved in Vallecano’s 0-0 tie with Barcelona despite the home team having an incredible 21 shots. Lewandowski, Christensen, and Raphinha all got the start, with Kessie coming off the bench in the second half. The evening was disappointing for Xavi’s team, and it was capped off with Sergio Busquets’ dismissal in the last seconds.
