The ban on Russian national and club teams, which was initially put in place in February 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine, has been extended by the governing body of European football. It indicates that the country has been disqualified from a second straight international competition after being eliminated from the World Cup qualifying round.

Following Vladimir Putin’s authorized strikes on Ukraine, FIFA and UEFA have banned Russian clubs and their national teams from participating in football events going forward. The nation’s World Cup campaign came to an end, while Spartak Moscow was eliminated from the Europa League, ending its Europa League run as well.

Russia have been suspended by FIFA and UEFA since the invasion of Ukraine

Russia

After Oleksandr Petrakov, the manager of Ukraine, expressed a desire to take up arms and defend his nation, Russian football officials pushed UEFA to impose a ban on him.

Petrakov promised in April that if Russian forces reached the Ukrainian capital, he would fight alongside his fellow citizens. “I thought, if they come to Kyiv, I will pick up a weapon and defend my city,” he told to sources “I am 64 but I felt it was normal to do this. I think I could take two or three enemies out.”

The Football Union of Russia (FUR) was made aware of the statements after they were published by many newspapers throughout the continent. In a letter to UEFA’s control, ethics, and disciplinary body, Denis Rogachev, the FUR’s deputy secretary general, believes Petrakov’s remarks violated UEFA regulations and requests that he be suspended.

Russia won’t be included in the Euro 2024 group stage draw, which will take place in Frankfurt, Germany, in October, according to Ukrainian lawmaker and UEFA Executive Committee member Andriy Pavelko.

In response to the Russian allegations, Andriy Pavelko, a member of the UEFA Executive Committee, wrote on Facebook: “The Russian hysterics about the head coach of the national team of Ukraine, Oleksandr Petrakov, is not worth the slightest attention, because their impolite complaint has long been taken into consideration by UEFA. Of course, no decision regarding suspension has been made and could not have been made. The Ukraine FA will pay a nominal fine and a warning.
