Brazil National team recently donned a black kit for the first half of their match. This was done to take a stand against racism. Brazil played Guinea in Spain and ditched their traditional threads of yellow and sported a black kit to send a message against racism. This was after repeated cases of racism against Brazilian winger, Vinicius Jr.

Brazil won the match with a score of 4-1. Before the game, both teams stood behind a sign that read in Portuguese, “With racism, there is no game.” Joelinton, a Newcastle United midfielder, made his Brazil debut and scored after 27 minutes, knocking in a rebound. Rodrygo added a second goal, which was responded by Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy’s strike before halftime. After the half, Brazil changed into their regular yellow shirts and blue shorts, and defender Eder Militao scored their third goal in the 47th minute before Vinicius scored a spot-kick in the dying moments.

Ironically the game which was being played as a stance against racism had an incident of racial abuse. A security guard being the perpetrator of the abuse. Felipe Silva, Vini Jr.’s counselor and friend, was coming at the stadium in Barcelona, Spain, for the game. However, he was stopped by a security guard, who removed a banana from his pocket. The guard reportedly proceeded to say, “Hands up, this one is my pistol for you.”

Vini Jr condemned the incident and remarked the following in a tweet. He said, “While I was playing with the already historic black shirt and getting emotional, my friend was humiliated and mocked at the entrance to the stadium. The treatment was sad, at all times they doubted the surreal scene that happened. Backstage is disgusting. But to make everything public, I ask those responsible: where are the security camera footage?”

Over the years, La Liga has had the same racism problem. And the problem shows no signs of abating or being addressed effectively by the authorities. Vinicus Jr. has been abused several times in the last year, but little has been done to address the situation. Here are a few examples:

Atletico Madrid fans hang effigy over Valdebebas bridge in January 2023:

Spanish police investigated an incident in which an effigy of ‘Vini Jr No. 20’ was hung from a highway bridge near Real Madrid’s Valdebebas training complex.

Mallorca fans were seen attacking Vinicius Jr.:

Mallorca fans were also filmed on social media yelling racist obscenities towards him, with officials failing to identify and punish those responsible.

Valencia penalized for fan racism:

Sections of fans located in the home seats at the Estadio Mestaella chanted racist chants at Vinicius Jr. Valencia responded by excluding fans from their stadium.
