The biggest shock of the World Cup so far has been Germany’s elimination from the 2022 edition and the news was embraced with laughter by their adversaries. Those include not just Germany’s arch nemesis like the English, where Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, who both lost to the German national team in vital semifinal matches, were thrilled with the country’s defeat.
Qatar is also pleased with Die Mannschaft’s elimination who despite defeating Costa Rica 4-2 on Thursday were eliminated after finishing behind Spain and Japan. The World Cup hosts’ excitement comes after a spat earlier in the tournament over Germans stepping out in support of LGBT+ rights.
Prior to the tournament, Germany had campaigned in support of workers’ rights in the Gulf state, and after Fifa prohibited teams from donning rainbow armbands, they posed with their hands over their mouths during their opening match. The four-time world champions’ decision to protest against Qatar’s ban on homosexuality incited rage in Doha. Consequently, euphoria over the elimination from the World Cup is unparalleled.

Qatar sports program mocks Germans’ early exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup
Germany’s elimination from the competition was celebrated on TV by the nation’s premier football programme, “Al Majlis.” After Germany was eliminated, commentators waved goodbye to the camera while covering their mouths in mockery of the players’ earlier gestures.
Qatari supporters were also expressing their joy on social media, claiming that Germany’s elimination was due to the team’s political campaigning. Some Qatari fans also drew maps to the airpot in Doha so that Germans can leave as soon as possible, captivating the mockery to a whole new level.
Germany’s early exit is now considered a ‘new low’ for the 4-time World champions. Changes would certainly be made by either exclusion of old players from the team or firing coach Hansi Flick who has underperformed with highly talented group during his tenure. It is rumoured that DFB will hold a crisis meeting after the team returns back to Germany.
