“When I saw them both together, I was moved”- Barcelona President on turning ‘emotional’ after seeing Pedri and Gavi at 2022 Ballon d’Or ceremony

Gavi, Pedri and Joan Laporta

Barcelona president Joan Laporta was quick to express his pride, despite the club’s difficult year. Gavi won the Kopa award for the best young player after establishing himself in both the Spanish national team and the Barcelona team during the season.

Robert Lewandowski received the Gerd Muller award for the best goal scorer. Pedri, the previous winner presented Gavi with the Kopa award. It was a scene that moved Laporta to tears in the audience.

“I got emotional when I saw Gavi and Pedri together. How couldn’t I? Gavi said that Barça is the club of his life.”

“When I saw them both together, I was moved because I love Barca and these two young players. The past year Pedri won it and this year they gave it to Gavi. He is a boy that makes you love him, a very restless man and you see it in all of his performances”

Real Madrid stole the show at the Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday night, but Barcelona also took home three awards despite a disappointing season for the men’s team last year. Alexia Putellas won her second Ballon d’Or for the women’s game after a double-winning season and a return to the Champions League final.

Gavi and Pedri are the future of Barcelona

Gavi and Pedri

Pedri and Gavi, two teenage midfielders helped Barcelona over the line as they began a potentially season-defining run of six games in 17 days with a 1-0 win over Celta Vigo at Camp Nou to reclaim the top spot in LaLiga.

So far this season, Barcelona has relied heavily on veteran striker Robert Lewandowski’s goals, but it was the young midfield duo who combined to score the game’s only goal in the first half. When Gavi’s dangerous cross was only partially dealt with by Unai Nunez, Pedri had the simple task of rolling the ball home from close range.

But it wasn’t just the goal that distinguished them from their teammates. Gavi was everywhere, flying around at 200 mph, making tackles at one end and then nearly turning home crosses at the other. Meanwhile, Pedri, 19, gave the home crowd perhaps the biggest cheer of the night when he nutmegged Hugo Mallo as he beat three men to carry the ball forward before feeding Ferran Torres.
