Why Paulo Fonseca is the best manager to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Everton?

Paulo Fonseca's final games for AS Roma. Can he stage a comeback?

Carlo Ancelotti has left Everton to join Real Madrid just after one full season with the Merseysiders. This has left Everton in the lurch as the club has to appoint a manager in the war footing apart from drawing the transfer strategies for the 2021/22 season. Everton are looking for managers in the market and to their avail, the big-name managers are engaged in the big clubs.

Though the likes of Antonio Conte and Maurizio Sarri are available for free, the lack of European football will hurt Everton’s chances. Also, Fabrizio Romano stated that Conte is in talks with the Tottenham Hotspur manager as they are also without a permanent manager. This would leave Everton with very few options to choose from. However, the Merseysiders can look at Paulo Fonseca who can fill the void at Goodison Park.

Paulo Fonseca can establish an image and brand for Everton

Paulo Fonseca was sacked by AS Roma after a poor outing in the 2020/21 season. Though they hired Jose Mourinho for the job, the Italian outfit decided to keep Fonseca till the end of the season. The 48-year-old manager is a free agent and can be a perfect replacement for Ancelotti.

The Portuguese tactician is known for his attacking yet simple football with an attacking philosophy. The manager hates to stick to a defensive and pragmatic approach as we can see from his formations in Serie A and other European competitions. Before joining the Italian club, Fonseca was largely successful with the Ukrainian outfit, Shakhtar Donetsk. With the attacking brand of football in Ukraine, the manager collected 2.37 points per game on an average during his three years’ stay.

Paulo Fonseca has favored the 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 approaches in his tenure as the gaffer, demanding more inputs and efforts from full-backs. Everton played 5-3-2 or 3-5-2 for most of the season under Ancelotti and it will not be a difficult task for the likes of Lucas Digne and Mason Holgate to adapt to the new system.

Paulo Fonseca is known for his patient approach on the sidelines rather hurrying his side to keep on attacking the opposition. During his tenure at AS Roma, he was seen hoping for his strikers/attackers to get hold of the ball. At Everton, Dominic Calvert Lewin and Richarlison can do the magic alongside James Rodriguez. Allan and Andre Gomes can provide the depth in the midfield for the manager.

Everton have failed to establish a particular style of football in the recent times. Paulo Fonseca can be the manager who can lead Everton’s way as he is one of the best man managers as well.
