USA National football team to wear shirts with redesigned ‘Rainbow’ colored crest in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in support of the LGBTQ+ community

The USA football team has made a bold statement ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup by choosing to redesign their crest and using the rainbow-colored theme to show solidarity and support for the LGBTQ+ community. USA was the first nation to land in Qatar and begin its preparations for the big tournament.

The previous crest had the usual red stripes, and the new one is filled with rainbow colors. Despite the fact that it won’t be worn on the ground, the base where the team is staying in Doha is completely filled with this new logo. It would be a huge statement on such a big stage where the whole world would be watching them, and it would spread and convey the right message.

The land of Qatar is criticized for its human rights record and attitude towards homosexuality and a few days ago, a Qatar World Cup ambassador also claimed that homosexuality was ‘damage to the mind’, and it remains illegal to be gay in the conservative Muslim country. The USA team is staying at the Al Gharrafa SC Stadium in Ar-Rayyan and on the walls, the new crest is painted with the slogan ‘One Nation’.

What message did USA try to convey through their new initiative?

USMNT’s Chief Communications Officer, Neil Buethe said, “Our rainbow badge has an important and consistent role in the identity of U.S. Soccer. As part of our approach for any match or event, we include rainbow branding to support and embrace the LGBTQ community, as well as to promote a spirit of inclusiveness and welcoming to all fans across the globe.”

He added, “As a result, locations that we will manage and operate at the FIFA World Cup, such as the team hotel, media areas, and parties, will feature both traditional and rainbow U.S. Soccer branding.” Qatar has been under the limelight over the human rights of traveling fans, especially LGBTQ+ individuals.
