Top 5 English Goalkeepers currently

England have been home to a number of great goalkeepers in the history of football, with the likes of David Seaman, David James and the legendary 1966 World Cup winning shot-stopper Gordon Banks, considered as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, who have brought name and fame to their teams both at the club and country level.

#5 Aaron Ramsdale (SHEFFIELD UNITED)

Ramsdale established himself as Bournemouth’s first choice keeper within the first few months of the 2019–20 season, as started every single Premier League game for the club from the opening day of the season, when he made both his debut for Bournemouth and Premier League debut against former club Sheffield United.

Ramsdale returned to Sheffield United who were then promoted to the Premier League for an assumed fee of £18.5 million on a four year deal and displayed a delightful performance throughout the campaign, although he couldn’t keep the Blades afloat in the top flight. In May 2021, he was named both Sheffield United’s Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year. Ramsdale also won the U-19 European Championships with England U-19 team in 2017 as he started all five matches.

#4 Sam Johnstone (WEST BROMWICH ALBION)

Sam Johnstone, a former Manchester United graduate, could never play for the Red Devils at the senior level as he was loaned out to other clubs every season. However, the shot-stopper from Preston soon caught eyes during his loan days at Aston Villa in 2017-18, making 66 appearances for The Claret and Blue over the two season, before being sold to West Bromwich Albion where he found his footing.

Johnstone signed a four-year contract with West Bromwich Albion on 3 July 2018 for a transfer fee of initial £6.5 million. Johnstone helped West Brom gain automatic promotion to the Premier League for 2020–21 and kept his place as West Brom’s first-choice goalkeeper. Johnstone had a great season despite the club being relegated that year as he produced a number of ‘world class’ saves throughout the season, securing vital points on tough match days. He was also named in the final 26-man England squad for the Euro 2020.

#3 Dean Henderson (MANCHESTER UNITED)

Dean Henderson spent his youth career with Carlisle United and then with Manchester United, before signing a professional contract with the club in 2015, with an extension in 2018 for another two years untill 2022. Dean Henderson was loaned out to Sheffield United in 2018-19 and helped them back to the Premier League for the first time since 2007, as he won the club’s Young Player of the Year award as well as the Championship Golden Globe with 20 clean sheets.

Henderson made his Premier League debut in a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth in 2019-20, after returning to Sheffield for another loan term. Dean had 11 clean sheets that season and made six big saves, as he returned to become one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first team goalkeepers in 2020-21. Henderson was also initially named in the 26-man England squad for the Euro 2020, but he missed out with a hip injury.

#2 Jordan Pickford (EVERTON)

After spending much of his career in for Sunderland and on loan at clubs like Darlington, Alfreton Town, Burton Albion, Carlisle United, Bradford City, Preston North End, Pickford finally joined Premier League club Everton in 2017 for a fee of £25 million, making him the third most expensive goalkeeper in history at that time and also the most expensive English goalkeeper of all time. Pickford lived up to his price tag, as he was named Everton’s player of the season in his debut campaign.

Pickford made his debut in a friendly against Germany in 2017 that ended 0-0, and was named in England’s 2018 World Cup squad by Gareth Southgate. Pickford helped England to their first World Cup penalty shootout victory against Colombia in the last 16 as he kept out Carlos Bacca’s shot, leading them to the quarters. Pickford was also England’s first choice goalkeeper for the rescheduled Euro 2020, and took them all the way to the finals. Pickford set an all-time English record for most consecutive minutes without conceding a goal held by a goalkeeper, passing a record previously held by Gordon Banks(720 minutes). Though Pickford saved two penalties in the final against Italy, it didn’t help Engalnd as they lost out 3-2.

#1 Nick Pope (BURNLEY FC)

Nick Pope had his youth career with Ipswich Town and joined Bury Town after being released at 16. Pope signed for League One club Charlton Athletic in May 2011, followed by loan spells with Harrow Borough, Welling United, Cambridge United, Aldershot Town, York City, and Bury, before joining Premier League club Burnley in 2016 on a three year contract for an undisclosed fee.

Pope made his Premier League debut on 10 September 2017 when he replaced the injured Tom Heaton in the first half in a 1–0 home win over Crystal Palace. Pope signed a new contract with Burnley in May 2019 which initially run until 2023. The English shot-stopper had a prolific 2019–20, as he featured in every minute of Burnley’s Premier League campaign and kept 15 clean sheets in the season. Though he missed out on the Golden Glove award when Burnley conceded two goals in the last game of the season, Pope was hugely applauded for his performance throughout the season. Pope made his England debut in a pre World Cup friendly against Costa Rica in 2018 and was also named in 2018 World Cup squad.
