Tottenham Hotspur were beaten 2-0 by fellow London rivals Chelsea yesterday in the 1st leg of the semi finals of the Carabao Cup at Stamford Bridge. Spurs were nowhere near the level of Chelsea and could not even string two passes together.

Spurs failed to have a shot on target in the first half and their star players Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min couldn’t even get the ball to the Chelsea box to force their keeper to make a save. Chelsea were ruthless throughout the game and didn’t give Spurs a chance to counter attack.

The 2-0 defeat leaves Tottenham Hotspur with a mountain to climb in the 2nd leg next Wednesday if they want to win their first trophy in 14 years. Spurs had one of their worst performances of the season in the first half against the Blues.

However, Conte’s men improved slightly after the introduction of Tanguy Ndombele. Harry Kane looked lively in the 2nd half and forced a brilliant save from Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, but there was nothing more the Spanish keeper had to do.

Chelsea youngster Kai Havertz opened the scoring with a brilliant goal after Marcos Alonso snatched the ball from Spurs defender Emerson Royal and played it through to the German youngster. The Blues’ second goal was a comedy of errors after Tottenham Hotspur defender Tanganga head the ball straight into his team-mate Ben Davies following a free-kick, and the deflection ended up in the back of the net.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte was far from convinced with his team’s performance against Chelsea in the 1st leg of the Carabao Cup yesterday night. The Italian was brutally honest after the game in his post match interview and did not hold back in calling out the team’s efforts.

Conte said,” It was a difficult game, from the start. Chelsea showed they were much better than us. In the first half, we struggled a lot but we know that we’re talking about one of the best teams in Europe and in the world.”

The Italian manager added,” Last year, they won the Champions League and if you compare the two teams I think there’s no comparison. We’re talking about a team that’s ready to win and they’ve played an important part over many years. Today, we have seen the difference between the two teams.”

“I said that these types of games can show us the difference in the gap there is between us and top clubs like Chelsea. We struggled a lot this evening and they showed us they are much stronger than us. There is a lot of work to do in aspects, because in this moment in the last couple of years, the level of Tottenham has dropped a lot,” said Conte.

The Italian manager also said,” Now we have to rebuild, and to rebuild we need patience and more time. I understand it is not simple to accept this, especially for the fans, but we are working a lot to try and fight. Right now we are in the middle. We are not up and down, we are in the middle.”

Antonio Conte said,” It is part of a process. We need the fans to stay behind us, and they have been fantastic in the way they have supported us. But I want to speak the truth and say we are clearly in the middle and need time.”

“It is not easy to play at Stamford Bridge, the way they were very concentrated, they won the ball every time and then we conceded also a goal where we were unlucky. When you start a game and after a few minutes they score, for sure the game becomes very difficult. But I know the situation, it is very clear in this moment there is a gap. We have to try to fight and stay in the league in a good position, but we are close, I think we are not in the right way,” said Antonio Conte.
