Derby County is heading towards administration and because of that, the club was given a 21 point deduction by the EFL. This left Rooney’s team at the bottom of the league. However, the club has fought against the odds and are now just 7 points from safety with more than 17 games to go in the season.

Rooney had been approached by his former club Everton last week for the manager’s job after the Blues confirmed the sacking of Rafa Benitez. However, it was then reported that Rooney had turned down the opportunity for the job as he was more committed to ensure Derby County’s safety.

Rooney released a statement saying,” Everton approached my agent and asked me to interview for the job. I turned it down. I believe I will be a Premier League manager and I am ready for that 100%. But I have a job at Derby, which is important to me.”
