Quincy Promes was once a promising star, showing his worth in the Russian league while at Spartak Moscow. Regarding himself as a player with speed and technique, Promes claims he shows the beautiful game and entertains fans. Despite their talent, Promes finds himself in legal problems and faces jail time.
The problems began in December 2020, when he was accused of stabbing a person in July that year. It was revealed that the person he stabbed was his cousin and the prosecutors demanded that he be jailed. Three years after the stabbing, he was found guilty of the crime and was sentenced to 18 months of imprisonment. Promes did not attend a single court hearing.

Things got worse for him when he was accused of smuggling 1,361 kilograms of cocaine into the Netherlands. He brought the drugs in through Antwerp, Belgium, which is just 90 minutes away from the Netherlands border.
On 30th May, the public prosecutors demanded a 9-year imprisonment for the Dutch forward, with a hearing set for 24th January. Promes yet again didn’t attend the hearings and the court decided on a guilty verdict. Promes now had to serve 126 months in jail. He currently is in Russia, playing for Spartak Moscow.
How is Quincy Promes still playing football?
Despite being sentenced to 126 months of imprisonment, Quincy Promes is not in jail. He is currently playing football in Russia, playing for Spartak Moscow. Just a month after being accused of stabbing his cousin, he left Ajax for the Russian club.

How is he not imprisoned? It’s due to The Netherlands not having any extradition treaty with Russia. Ever since shifting to Spartak, the player has been able to continue his career with ease without the threat of being imprisoned back home.
When he was originally charged for stabbing his cousin, there were no travel restrictions on him and he was able to move back to Russia in 2021. His assets were temporarily frozen as well, which didn’t affect his move to Russia.
Promes currently is trying to gain a Russian passport, while also being a citizen of the United Arab Emirates. Since returning to Spartak Moscow, he has played 99 matches and has scored 46 goals. In the current season, he has played 17 matches, with six goals and six assists.
