Australian GP: Charles Leclerc stokes a flawless performance to win his second race of season ahead of Sergio Perez; Max Verstappen’s shocking retirement

Charles Leclerc at the Australian GP

Charles Leclerc has passed one of the toughest tests at the Australian GP with flying colors. The Monegasque driver looked in absolute control of the race leading it from start to the very end. We expected more pressure from the reigning World champion, Max Verstappen. But we saw none of it as Max struggled to match Leclerc for pace.

It’s been a mixed weekend for Ferrari with Charles Leclerc winning the race and Carlos Sainz retiring due to a terminal spin in the first few laps of the race. But Red Bull has had a horrible weekend, keeping in mind the opportunity that they had at their disposal. Sergio Perez was the only positive from the Australian GP but Max Verstappen’s retirement was a major setback both for the driver’s and the constructor’s championship.

Two teams which have somewhat redeemed themselves are McLaren and Mercedes. Both had disappointing starts to the season, owing to the standards that they have set. Mercedes’ duo of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton finished P3 and P4 respectively while McLaren should be quietly pleased with both Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris scoring points.

Thing didn’t go as well as they could for Alpine and Fernando Alonso who definitely had the pace all weekend to battle it out at the very top but finished P17, outside of the points while his team mate Esteban Ocon finished P7. Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon rounded up the top 10 by finishing P9 and P10 respectively.

But what has been made clear this weekend is that Ferrari is the team to beat this season. Charles Leclerc has been head and shoulders above the chasing pack. Also, the fragile nature of the Red Bull has been exposed after Max Verstappen retire in 2 out of the first three races. Max Verstappen has his work cut out if he wants to compete with Charles Leclerc who is already 34 points ahead of him and we are only three races into the season.
