As dawn breaks on a brand new, sexier era of Formula 1, everyone’s waiting for the action to kick start in the much awaited season opener in Bahrain. After one of the most exciting seasons in the history of Formula 1, the bar of expectation has been set higher than ever. Following Friday’s practice run, everyone has their eyes set on qualifying on Saturday. The drivers are licking their lips to get on with it.

Now, the question arises who looks set to take pole on Saturday? After having gone through a massive overhaul in regulations, cars and tracks, the power dynamic seems to be taking a swing. On the basis of evidence in front of us after the pre season testing in Barcelona and Bahrain, the two teams which have turned heads in the paddock are Ferrari and Red Bull while Mercedes seemed to be lagging behind.

The two stand out drivers that look most likely to take pole are Charles Leclerc and the current world champion Max Verstappen. Let’s start with Charles Leclerc. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc has been on fire every time he has stepped out on the track. The Monocan helped Ferrari to top more sessions than any other team which has sent a strong message to most teams that Ferrari is out of the hole and mean business this season.

Ferrari was strong in both Barcelona and Bahrain with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc constantly in the top three of the timings.”

“Most teams on the grid have singled Ferrari out as being a contender for race wins in the first few races of the year.”

Now coming to Red Bull and Max Verstappen. We all know what the world champion is capable of and he continued to build on the strong foundation of last year. Max Verstappen did the fastest lap of 1.31.270 with absolute ease and without dropping a sweat. The Dutchman also led the way in Friday’s practice session setting the fastest lap at 1.31.936 in the brand new RB-18.

“Even when Verstappen was third fastest on day two in Bahrain, the world champion said the car was quick without even trying. An ominous message.” As reported by gpfans.

This proposition might be scary as he trundled through the test before showing putting the foot on the accelerator during the end shows how confident Red Bull is.

Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton have their work cut out ahead of Saturday’s qualifying. Every time there is a change in regulations, a new player emerges on the track and takes over the reins. Mercedes needs to find the answers before the situation gets out of hand.
