As the much awaited Italian Grand Prix will take place soon in Monza, Ferrari who will be racing at their home circuit can only hope for a win like 2019. The support of the Tifosi towards Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz as the Covid-19 restrictions decrease will be a much welcome move. Ahead of Monza, the drivers sat for a talk with Rossana Tenant, reminiscing about the season so far.

Currently, Charles Leclerc stands 6 in the drivers standings, with a total of 92 points, and a podium finish in Silverstone. Carlos Sainz on his other hand has done well for his first year as a Ferrari driver. He has accumulated 89.5 points with podiums in Monaco and Hungary, and stands in 7th place. The team as a whole has done much better this year, currently standing in 3rd place in the drivers standings which has been a huge leap from the disaster last year.

Speaking about his performance in the season so far, Leclerc said that he is personally quite happy. There’s obviously been some difficult moments like Monaco and Hungary were 2 big moments he missed out. He then went on to say that that they have been working quite well as a team. Praising his teammate, he said that Carlos has been going very well and they are pushing each other.

“It is great, and I think it is constructive for the team. We are pushing in the right direction and we always want more, which makes us push harder than ever.”

Sainz said that he has been absolutely loving his time at Ferrari. “Its been really cool and I don’t think I could have asked for anything more, especially with the integration process to help me fit into the team. Everyone including Charles made me feel like a part of the team straightaway,” he added.

“Overall it has just been a better package this year,” Charles Leclerc

In terms of performance, Carlos Sainz said that they have been there- there about- but they of course want more. Sainz said would have liked to go into summer break with a few more points, but overall he cannot complain and it will continue to get better with more races.

Talking about car changes since last year, Leclerc said that overall it has just been a better package. He noted that the car feels better and that shows that the team is doing something right. “We have been progressing well and I hope that next year we will be in contention to fight for the championship title in 2022,” he concluded.

Both drivers in the team have had podiums this year, and their fair share of spectacular moments. Talking about this, Sainz said, “I think the podium for me in Monaco and Charles in Silverstone was on merit, pace and car performance, which compared to last year is a very good step.”

However he quickly went on to add that although they have been getting success, it does not mean they are where they want to be, they will continue pushing to be better.

With his first year at Ferrari, Sainz is getting used to the environment. He talked about his excellenct experience with the team and driving the car. The only thing left for him however is to experience the Tifosi yet and having the fans near him at Ferrari’s home Grand Prix. This year Sainz hopes to experience that as the drivers take on the Monza circuit next.

Talking about his teammate, Charles Leclerc said that Carlos brought a different dynamic to the team and it has been great. “We are both young and very motivated. We are trying to bring something more to every race, and we are competitive on the track, but in a healthy way,” Charles said.

Charles said that the track in Monza is made special for him because of the Tifosi. This year there will be people in the grandstand, and it will be an amazing feeling, he added. But his win in 2019 was something very special which he will remember forever. “I feel extra motivation when racing in front of the Tifosi because when you feel so much support you really want to do well. The buildup to the race is much more, and so if we succeed it’ll be even better.”

Sainz, who will be racing here as a Ferrari driver in Monza for the first time said that it was a historic track, and there is so much support from the Italian fans. He also went on to add that the last few races have taught everyone that anything can happen.

He ended the interview with the perfect response ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, saying, “I would like to tell the Tifosi that don’t expect the win, but expect the unexpected.”
