Mercedes are not looking like the fastest car on the 2022 Formula One Grid. The team suffered from porpoising during the Pre-season tests and was way out of pace when compared with the likes of Red Bull and Ferrari. And this could impact whether Lewis Hamilton chooses to stay in the sport or not.

Hamilton likes perfection and is used to winning regularly since he joined the Silver Arrows. So it is a fact that he would not have found the W13’s performance so far to be positive. The Briton shared that his team were fortunate with the podium as none of them “were expecting a result like that.”

Hamilton who is chasing his elusive 8th world championship title needs to be in a competitive car according to Formula One Pundit Martin Brundle. The British Commentator says the 37-year-old driver will ask more from his team in order to keep competing in the sport. And if they don’t, Brundle says they may lose Hamilton at the end of this season.

Lewis Hamilton who started the race P5 was not expecting a good result but got away with a 3rd place finish following the retirement of both Red Bull cars. 2021 title rival Max Verstappen retired in Lap 53 following engine and steering issues, while Sergio Perez spun in the last lap and could not get the car back. Martin Brundle explained why Hamilton would look for more than just “good luck” to keep him in the sport.

Brundle said, “As long as he still has the motivation to get in the gym and to get on a plane, the hours of debriefing afterwards and the hours of media, talking to the likes of me; that’s what the drivers hate, basically. They just want to drive racing cars.”

He added, “As long as he’s still enjoying the bits around F1 or he can tolerate those bits around F1 and balance it out with just loving driving the car, [he’ll stay]. [But] if he goes through the whole year and Mercedes are third fastest and others are catching them up, then I suspect he’ll take a different view and my enjoyment analogy will play out in that he won’t be enjoying it anymore.”

Brundle is convinced he is as motivated as ever before to bag another Drivers’ Championship. Hamilton signed a 2-year contract extension until the end of the 2023 Formula One with Mercedes. And his stay at Brackley is dependant on how long he is welcome on the top step of the podium.
