“I have no doubt that Mercedes will join at some point in this fight,” Christian Horner on Ever-looming threat of reigning champions
Mercedes
The Red Bull team Principal Christian Horner has recently given his view on the Mercedes F1 team that is a bit behind in terms of pace of Ferrari and Red Bull.
Christian Horner is adamant that Mercedes is going to come to the championship party sooner or later and has said, “I have no doubt that Mercedes will join at some point in this fight [against Ferrari].”
On the basis of the first two races of the 2022 F1 season, Mercedes is currently the third quickest team on the grid behind Ferrari and Red Bull.
However, the gap between the first two teams compared to third placed Mercedes is huge and this is one of the main reasons why Mercedes has been seen struggling to keep pace with Ferrari and Red Bull.
Christian Horner has been at Red Bull for a long time and during the turbo hybrid era was used to seeing the back of Mercedes during races, so Horner has not ruled out Mercedes out of the championship fight just yet and believes that their comeback in the championship fight is “inevitable.”
Christian Horner’s Red Bull is behind Mercedes in the constructors
The Bahrain Grand Prix of the current F1 season was a race full of unpredictable events and one such incident helped the Mercedes team in finishing the Bahrain Grand Prix ahead of the two Red Bulls.
During the final lap of the Bahrain race, Lewis and George were running behind the top two teams in 5th and 6th with no hope of scoring a podium, F1 is known for weird moments and one such moment happened when the two Red Bull’s bowed out of the race with mechanical issues and Christian Horner was left scratching his head.
This opened the door for Mercedes to pounce and they certainly did by finishing 3rd and 4th in the Bahrain Grand Prix. Currently even after Max’s win in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Red Bull are on 37 points in the constructors whereas the Mercedes team is on 38 points.
Mercedes has been a bit lucky so far in the season but if they want to fight for the title this season they have to come up with a car adept enough to take on the pacey Ferrari and Red Bull team.
They cannot ride on the back of luck forever because sooner or later it will run out and the team would have to do things on their own.
