No one could have predicted what happened to George Russell and Lewis Hamilton in Saudi Arabia GP qualifying. The duo just had absolutely no control over the car. George Russell was a lot better than Lewis Hamilton but no where close to where we all expect a Mercedes driver to be. We haven’t seen a Mercedes car literally battling for P5 or P6 for the longest time.

It was one of the worst days for Lewis Hamilton as he failed to make it out of Q1. This is something that Mercedes is not used to. The seven time was heard saying on the team radio, “Can’t seem to improve man,” just before the end of Q1. Things seem to be going downhill for a team that has only enjoyed success in the last decade.

This is George Russell’s first full season for the team and he would have wanted to make a name for himself but the car has been so off the pace that he can’t do much more than what he did last night. The problems are mounting up for Mercedes as the team struggles to deal with “porpoising.” The car was almost a second slower than Max Verstappen’s red bull on the straights.

This must have not gone down well for Toto Wolff and Mercedes. The team needs to find the answers sooner rather than later. George Russell in the post qualifying interview said, “We’re not here to be battling for P5 or P6.”

“It was a very difficult day for the team, the car is on a knife-edge and getting it in the right window is so difficult.”

“But that’s just where we are at the moment. It’s tricky because we’re putting all of our effort into this porpoising issue, and it’s not allowing us to focus on other things. As a team, it’s a bit of a shame.” As reported by gpfans.

Mercedes are not where they are supposed to be. This is the first time in a really long time that the team’s mettle has been tested. The chips are down and it’ll be interesting to see how Lewis Hamilton and George Russell react on race day.
