Lando Norris the McLaren Formula1 driver, in the opinion of Jolyon Palmer and Jack Nicholls, should have been the one to be signed by Mercedes for the 2022 Formula1 season.
Mercedes, however on the other hand has changed their driver lineup for the 2022 Formula1 season with George Russell taking the place of Valtteri Bottas. Valtteri is going to drive for Alfa Romeo during the 2022 season after signing a multi-year deal with the Ferrari sister team.
During his career for Mercedes Valtteri was able to win 10 races for the team and also helped the team in securing five consecutive world titles during 2017-2021.
It has been stated in formula1news that the former Formula1 driver Jolyon Palmer and commentator Jack Nicholls believe that Lando Norris would have been the better option for Mercedes instead of George Russel for the 2022 Formula1 season.
While praising Lando, Jack Nicholls has said “If I’m Mercedes…and I have a free choice in that second seat alongside Hamilton, I think I’m picking Norris over Russel all this year.”
Jolyon Palmer while agreeing with Nicholls said “I am going with Jack on it, I’m going with Lando. The way that he held off Lewis Hamilton at the end of the Sochi race until the strategy and the tire choice got away from him, was unbelievable.”
Lando Norris had a very solid 2021 Formula1 season
Lando Norris was not able to win the Russian Grand Prix but Jolyon was very impressed with the showing of the young British driver. In palmer’s opinion, the way Lando was able to handle the pressure of keeping Lewis behind for a sizeable amount of time was just exceptional.
He further added that “For a guy that has never won a race, to have a seven-time world champion breathing down his neck in a Mercedes, then it starts raining, and he’s still off the road a couple of times, scrabbling around, but keeping Hamilton, we all know how good he is in the wet, behind him, it was legendary stuff, I think from Norris.”
Palmer believes that Lando should be considered as one of the best drivers on the current grid, alongside Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
Palmer to back his statement has compared the contrasting seasons of Daniel Riccardo and Lando Norris. Daniel Riccardo has a lot of pedigree in Formula1 considering he is a former RedBull driver. Lando was able to outqualify his teammate comfortably during the 2021 season and was also able to score 160 points, 45 more than Daniel.
Lando Norris had an amazing 2021 Formula1 campaign and his performances during the 2021 season were worthy of him getting a seat at Mercedes instead of George Russell.
George is set to partner Lewis during the 2022 season and most of the pundits are quite skeptical whether George would be able to push Lewis Hamilton more than Valtteri was able to do. The RedBull team adviser Helmut Marko on the other hand has said that the match-up between the Mercedes drivers is going to help RedBull in their quest for another strong season.
