During the majority of the latter part of the Dutch Grand Prix, the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton was eager in displaying his dissatisfaction upon the status of his tyres on his team radio. To which Red Bull’s advisor Helmut Marko has deemed him as ‘a little theatrical’ following the sequence of his radio messages on the tyre-related problems at Zandvoort.

Many race fans will be aware that both Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton made two pit stops at Zandvoort. Yet they used different tyre compounds during the finale. The Mercedes’ ace took on the medium tyres with 32 laps to go, whereas Max Verstappen was on the hards. Traffic on the laps leading up to his second pit-stop, and on his out lap, dented Hamilton’s undercut attempt. As a result of which the British was unable to prevent his Dutch rival from taking the victory.

“Lewis Hamilton tends to be a bit theatrical,” Helmut Marko told Sky Sport Germany. “We were also watching Mercedes’ tyres closely and saw that it became critical with [Valtteri] Bottas. On the whole, it was fine.”

Red Bull’s advisor Helmut Marko added, “We thought that after the second stop we could use the Hard tyres without any problems. Hamilton attacked strongly, which Max covered. Then it was just about driving the race home.”

However, the 78-years-old praised Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes for a “tough and fair” race in-front of Max Verstappen’s home fans.

“It was a hard fight from the first to the last lap,” he commented. “I have to compliment not only the Dutch, but also Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton. The way they behaved – that’s how a race should be.”
