Lewis Hamilton the Mercedes Formula1 driver lost out on his record-breaking eighth world title at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix of the 2021 season and according to the vice-chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group Lord Peter Hain, the result of the Grand Prix was bad for the sport.
While talking about the Abu Grand Prix to the Express Lord Peter Hain has said “That’s not good for the sport. It may be exciting and it may be dramatic. It may gain the audiences that Formula1 crave, but you have to think of the credibility, and integrity of the sport in the long term.”
He has further added that “The finish was effectively rigged by the stewards in order to produce a dramatic finale for the theater rather than a racing outcome.” It seems Lord Peter Hain like many other formula1 experts has been left bemused and distraught at the incidents of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton was comfortably leading the Abui Dhabi Grand Prix for most of the race and it was only after Nicholas Latifi’s crash that Max Verstappen was able to get back into the race. Moreover, Mercedes and Lewis were not in a position to risk a pit stop as they were in the lead of the race, but Max did pit, and Micheal Masi’s decision to let some of the lapped cars pass the safety car allowed Max to get behind Lewis for the last lap of the race.
This was not right in Lord Peter Hain’s view and hence has branded the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix result as “rigged.”
Lord Peter Hain: Lewis Hamilton behaved with dignity
According to Lord Peter Hain to lose a race in such an unprecedented manner must have been very difficult for Lewis Hamilton and has said that “I think the result has left a sour taste unless you are a die-hard Max Verstappen fan, but even many of them have admitted that it has left an unpleasant taste in their mouths.”
While applauding Lewis, Lord Peter Hain has said “I think Lewis behaved with enormous dignity afterward, going to the RedBull pit to congratulate them, but he must feel absolutely gutted and that the rules are rigged against him.”
The current Ferrari driver seems to agree with Lord Peter Hain’s statement as to when the incident took place Carlos was running in third and while talking on the team radio said “I think it would be unfair to restart the race. We should stay behind the safety car.”
He further added that “It gives a massive advantage to some people.”
He was referring to none other than Max Verstappen as he was able to take advantage of the whole situation and was ultimately able to win the race and more importantly the world title.
