Max Verstappen Misses out on Prestigious BBC World Sport Star Award
Max Verstappen
As the 2021 Formula 1 season finally came to an end, it was Max Verstappen who reigned supreme over Lewis Hamilton in what was seen as one of the greatest rivalries of all time in the sport. The season had its share of ups and downs, as drama gripped each race of the year.
The last race at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was also filled with anticipation, as the title fight got pushed to the very last lap of the race. As a last minute decision was the decider in Verstappen taking the title, Mercedes were not happy with the much debated decision of all time. Regardless of any complaints that were raised, Max Verstappen was crowned World Champion at the official Gala on Thursday in Paris.
Max Verstappen Nominated for BBC World Sport Star Award
For his exceptional 2021 season, Verstappen was also nominated for the BBC a sports award for the best athletes abroad. Hamilton cannot be nominated for the award since he was a Brit. Frequent winners of the awards include Rodger Federer- four times, as well as Usain Bolt and Muhammed Ali who have received it three times.
While Verstappen did make a nomination, the last lap controversy at the Abu Dhabi controversy did not help his case much. The result was determined by an online vote. Irish Jockey Rachael Blackmore walked away with the win in the end. Aside from Verstappen, Mexican boxer Saul Alvarez, Tom Brady, Novak Djokovic and Jamaican sprinter Elaine Thompson-Herah were also nominated.
