“We’ve never had a situation,” Mercedes boss Toto Wolff shares early opinion on Lewis Hamilton and George Russell dynamic
Mercedes F1 Team Principal and CEO Toto Wolff is gearing up for another season of domination in the Hybrid Era. The Austrian aims to continue his winning streak and claim his 9th consecutive Constructor’s Championship title in 2022. But Mercedes doesn’t just have new Regulations to overcome but a new driver lineup ahead of the season.
Lewis Hamilton narrowly missed the championship title in the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi. The 7-time World Champion will be aiming to grab his 8th title alongside rookie and former Williams driver George Russell. George replaced Valterri Bottas as the Finn moved to Alfa Romeo.
Driving alongside Lewis Hamilton is a challenge indeed and many former teammates have spoken about the pressure to be as good as him Many of his teammates have been relegated to the task of a ‘B driver’ unable to beat him on the racetrack. Toto Wolff clarifies the dynamics between the two drivers and that he and the entire Mercedes team will steer it in the right direction.

Lewis Hamilton-George Russell dynamic in the right direction
Toto Wolff is confident that the two drivers will find a common ground in Mercedes and George Russell won’t have a problem adjusting to life at Brackley. Wolff said Russell will not be asked to back down from racing Hamilton stating “We’ve never had a situation of one and two. They’ve had equal opportunities and the same car.”
He added “This year, the interesting situation we have with George is an up-and-coming star, and undoubtedly, the best Formula 1 driver ever in the other seat. The dynamic is new and clearly is something we will try steer in a direction that has the most effect on developing the car and making us overall competitive.”
George Russell substituted for Hamilton during the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix. Hamilton could not race as he was tested positive for Covid-19. Russell raced marvellously and could have finished on the top step of the podium if not for a faulty pitstop.
