Fernando Alonso, the two-time Formula One world champion, took a jab at rival teams for failing to improve their vehicles over the off-season. Speaking after finishing third in the season opener at Bahrain, Alonso credited Aston Martin’s unexpected success to team owner Lawrence Stroll‘s vision and ambition, as well as the team’s single-minded emphasis on winning.

“I think you need to have the vision and the ambition of Lawrence Stroll, or our leadership and our management because the opportunities are there for everybody,” he said. “But it seems that only one team is willing to do whatever it takes to win. And I’m proud to be part of this organization.”

The Spaniard’s remarks follow Aston Martin’s substantial improvement in performance this season. After suffering for the majority of the previous season, the English team made changes to their car’s performance at the end of the previous season. They also employed some key members of the Red Bull crew, like Dan Hallows.

This season, they accelerated dramatically. The squad that struggled with the lower midfield all season last year has suddenly risen to become the third, if not the second, quickest vehicle on the grid. Teams invest millions of dollars in R&D yearly, yet progress may be excruciatingly slow. But it’s evident that Aston Martin’s strategy has paid off, and Alonso is not alone in this regard.

Alonso hopes for more than just podium finishes for Aston Martin

Aston Martin’s pace in pre-season testing was serious. With opponents such as Mercedes and Ferrari not seeming to be as comfortable with tyre degradation on their cars, the Silverstone squad appears to have more chances for success. Alonso’s podium result in Bahrain demonstrates that Aston Martin’s success is more than simply a marketing ploy. The team’s pace was real, and with each race, they appeared to be improving as a result of the more wind tunnel time. Alonso feels sure that his car is capable of winning a race this season.

“Even last year, I remember in Canada, wet qualifying, we were in the first row of the grid. You know, anything can happen in 22 races with different conditions. And, you know I will try my best to have the opportunity. Maybe we need some help. Last year, we needed some help from the top teams just to get the podium. But maybe this year, if there is this help or there are some retirements in front of us or some problems, maybe it’s more than a podium. So let’s hope for that.”

The success of Aston Martin may be attributed to the team’s willingness to take risks and make big modifications to their car’s design. According to Alonso’s views, other teams may not be taking similar risks, which might be a major role in their lack of advancement.“There are a couple of areas that we have to improve that I will not share. But I think the most important point is that the new Aston Martin is just a new car, a new project. This is just the beginning. This is not the final car, this is just the starting car of this concept that we changed over winter.”

The season has just begun for Alonso and Aston Martin. They appear to be improving with each race, and the English outfit is now a potential contender for victory. Alonso’s words show that their success is not due to chance, but rather to the team’s dedication to winning. “But it seems that only one team is willing to do whatever it takes to win,” Alonso said. “And I’m proud to be part of this organization.”
