Should Max Verstappen return his first ever Formula 1 trophy after fans calls him a ‘cheat’ following FIA’s decision to sack Michael Masi?
Max Verstappen Michael Masi and Lewis Hamilton
Max Verstappen stunned Lewis Hamilton and the world by winning his ever championship at the young age of 24. The current champion showed bravery and the technical proficiency to edge the former seven time world champion.
We cannot say that we didn’t see that coming and Max Verstappens delivered at the biggest stage of it all. But the sanctity of this victory has been destroyed post the controversy that happened in Abu Dhabi and especially after Michael Masi’s sacking.
The sacking somewhat makes it clear that there is an implied admission of guilt from FIA’s end. The orange army of Max Verstappen has backed him all along the way but the reaction from Lewis Hamilton’s faithful hasn’t been the same and quite understandably too.
The distress and disappointment can be fully comprehended post the debacle that happened in Abu Dhabi. But they seemed to have stretched too far when they have gone on to call it cheating and have asked the Dutch driver to return the trophy amidst the chaos. Does Max Verstappen have anything to do with the controversy? ABSOLUTELY NOT.
Winning cheating is not winning: Lewis Hamilton’s fans to Max Verstappen
Misinterpretation of a rule by an individual in a momentous situation is part of a sport and will continue to be so as human touch to any game will have that room for error. As long as there is no malicious intention behind the same, we cannot be overturning a decision as too many variables are involved in that particular situation.
The person making that mistake should be heavily reprimanded, as Michael Masi was done. This shall send a message to everyone who is in the seat of a decision maker but the driver who won it fair and square shouldn’t have to pay the price.
Max Verstappen was handed an opportunity which he grabbed with both hands and made that moment his own. Both the drivers have ridden their luck throughout the season and just because it so happened in the last race too, one shouldn’t be punished for a mistake not of their own making. So, it’s time to move on and accept the verdict.
